“When you combine some
of the best coaching and some of the best players in the state, only good
things can happen.”
With
that, the Vikings 2013 soccer season begins on a positive note, voiced through
senior Josh Smith, who has been a member of the soccer team for his entire high
school career. Other senior players joining Smith on the field this season
include Alex Burdette,Ryne Faber,Jojo Greeley-Fay, Parker Lively, Paul Lively,
Jacob McKown,and BayleeVankirk.
Unlike the football and
volleyball team, the boys’ coaching staff is very familiar to the players, led
by head coach Tim Ross and assistant coach Victor Boyce.
“I love playing for Tim
and Victor. They’re awesome coaches and will lead us to the state championship
this year,” said Smith, who later declared that the main goal for the year was
to make it to the state championship, something that Faber also agreed with.
“My goal for this season is for the team
to make it to states. That's what we want every year, but since this is my
senior year I really want to make it as far as possible,” said Faber.
So far, the outlook for
the remainder of the season looks encouraging. Their first game against Point
Pleasant resulted in a victory of 5-1. During their second game against
Winfield, the Vikings played hard but ultimately lost with a narrow 2-1 score.
However, the boys bounced back with a 3-1 win against Nitro August 29.
Future games will be
held September 3 at home against Cabell Midland and September 5 in an away game
against Hurricane. Everyone is encouraged to attend and support the Vikings.
The promising attitude the team has this year will surely reflect on the field.
