Coming off of the accomplishments
of a successful season can be difficult for every sports team. The question of continuing
to improve or failing to reach the previous year’s potential can be a hindrance
on every player. Thankfully, the Vikings cross country team isn’t letting the
pressure get to their heads. Senior Molli Cunningham was positive about the
current season.
“We’ve
been practicing really hard to rank high in regionals and qualify for states.”
Last
year’s cross country team was among the most successful Vikings sports of the
year. The boys ranked 1st at our regional meet and made it to states
where they ranked 5th. To say it was an exceptional year is an
understatement.
However,
this year is looking just as promising. According to senior Jake Casto, “Eating
my wheaties and working hard” are just a few of the changes he’s made to
improve upon his running times. Casto, an avid cross country and track runner, claims
that his goal is to beat the 5k record this year, something that he was clearly
preparing for considering he was doing pushups against a locker as he declared
this goal.
The
Covered Bridge Invitational, Ripley’s home meet, will be on September 21 at
Cedar Lakes. Everyone is encouraged to attend to motivate and support the cross
country team to excel. This year’s regional meet will also be located at Cedar
Lakes, but the date has yet to be announced.
Another year of excellence for the
Vikings cross country team is likely. The dedication that the cross country
team has proven has clearly been passed on to the current team which will
assuredly have a season to remember.
