Super Bowl XLVIII performances stand out

By: Audra Thomas

Super Bowl XLVIII held in MetLife Stadium, in New York started off with Queen Latifah singing “America the Beautiful”.  This was followed by opera singer Renee Fleming singing the National Anthem. Bruno Mars and Red Hot Chili Peppers performed at halftime.
After a disappointing first half of non-exciting play, the halftime show was not much better.  Bruno Mars came out with his feet dancing away while his singing was questionable. When Mars first appeared on the stage alone playing a drum solo, he then went into his songs “Locked Out of Heaven,” “Treasure,” “Runaway Baby”.  He and his band members were all wearing matching gold suits. When the Red Hot Chili Peppers came out to join him on stage the show got a little more exciting. They sang “Give It Away” together and then Mars finished off with his hit “Just The Way You Are.”
Controversy erupted after everyone noticed the guitars of the Red Hot Chili Peppers were not plugged in.  Bass guitarist, Flea, explains that the NFL knew that the music was pre-recorded, but vocals were live.  The NFL set this up because they wanted no possible way for the show to sound bad.
Before the game started, The Empire State Building put on a light show featuring the colors of both teams.  Last year was the first time they had the light show, but it was so popular they decided to do it again. When Super Bowl XLVIII concluded the Seahawks’ colors were shown again after the victory was secured.
