Finals before break make for relaxing vacation

By: Maisie Stout
This year, to many students’ delight, first semester will end before Christmas break. Finals will also be before break, which benefits students and teachers alike. For students, ending the semester earlier means there will be no stressful last minute studying or waiting until the last day of break to do a week’s worth of work.  Teachers will not have to spend as much of their week grading papers and preparing tests. Christmas break will be relaxed for everyone at Ripley High, though there is one small hitch.
When the schedule was changed to have the semester end before break, the semester was shorter as a result. Because we are required to have 90 days in each semester, first semester started earlier than it has in the past. In order to enjoy a stress-free Christmas break, we had to get rid of a few days of summer vacation to lengthen our semester. If we maintain this schedule in the future, summer vacation will continue to start early, assuming there are no snow days.
According to vice principal Beverly Shatto, this is a good idea because it will allow students to get their grades finalized before they go home and have an opportunity to forget all of the information that they learned. Having the semester end before Christmas vacation will draw the semester to close and allow everyone to take a break and have a fresh start.
The idea to have first semester end earlier seems like a good plan, but we will not know for sure until we try it. Think of this year as a trial period; if it is successful then next year might be the same schedule. Keep in mind, however, that in order to keep this schedule we will have to move a few of our summer vacation days to accommodate the new schedule.
Shatto said “nothing in education is ever permanent” so at this point it is hard to say what will happen in future years. For now let’s enjoy the 2016-2017 school year and a relaxed Christmas break.
