June 15, 2012, the Obama administration introduced Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. DACA, the act allows children who were brought to the U.S. illegally before June 15, 2012, 16 and 31 to stay in the U.S. legally temporarily. You must be at least 15 years old to apply for DACA. DACA helps these immigrants find a job, get a social security card, a driver's license, and to get bills in their names. Although this plan does not provide lawful status it will give you a two year time period to become a citizen. After the two year period, you can apply for a renewal. In order to qualify for DACA you must be enrolled in school, have not been convicted of a felony, misdemeanors, or have been honorably discharged from the military.
However, their reasoning of ending DACA is for security reasons. The Trump’s administration doesn’t believe letting immigrants enter the country the wrong way and letting them stay for 2 years. Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced in September that Trump’s administration is taking DACA to Congress. The hope is that Congress will put DACA to an end.
Our current administration is wrong to end DACA because he is targeting youth. This could put more than 800,000 people’s lives in the fear of deportation. Since these are mostly children who were brought to the U.S. illegally they are often referred to as Dreamers. We need DACA because it provides a new perspective to generations. Cultures clashing to make America even greater than before. America was created by immigrants, so let these people create.
If Congress chooses not to act on March 6, nearly 30,0000 people a month will lose their permits. This is for immigrants that have already applied that life here, they can try to apply for a renewal. Although if they don’t they will face deportation, once their permits are up. To find all the Dreamers this could cost up to more than $400 billion.
People protected under DACA are trying to better themselves for a better life. America is the land of opportunity, we are considering to throw out people that are trying to be a positive impact in the community. To be eligible you must attend school, have a high school diploma/GED, work, or been discharged honorably from the military. Also, they cannot have a criminal background.
We are so fortunate to have clean water, private bathrooms, a roof over our heads, hardwood floors to sit on, and freedom of speech. Dreamers leave everything they are familiar with for the unknown, just to have freedom. Sometimes we forget how privileged we are, we forget that once our ancestors immigrated to America. These immigrants changed America for the better, Dreamers want that as well. Americans should welcome children to the U.S. because we wouldn’t want our children to go without.
