Netflix will be turning off their programming for one hour per day during the month of April so that people can use that hour to be active. The popular movie streaming service has been around for over 20 years. Within those 20 years, people discovered the ability to binge-watch their favorite television shows and movies. It has become quite a problem with modern society because people are not exercising anymore. Instead, people are remaining indoors and watching television shows and movies that are on Netflix. Consequently, Americans are finding themselves to be obese. In an effort to prevent this, Netflix is issuing an “Hour of Play” throughout the month of April so that people can use that hour to be active during their spring breaks.
Netflix got the “Hour of Play” idea from Nickelodeon. In the 2000s, Nickelodeon began to issue their “Hour of Play” on specific days throughout the summer. However, Netflix’s will be from 5 to 6 p.m. each day from April 1 through April 30.
“We chose 5 p.m. because that is the time period where we see start to see the most activity on Netflix. From 5 o’clock to 10 o’clock p.m, there are 250 million people in the United States watching their favorite television shows,” said Netflix founder and CEO Reed Hastings.
There are 325.7 million people in the United States alone. That means that over three-fourths of the country is watching Netflix from 5 to 10 p.m.
According to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluations, an estimated 160 million Americans are obese. That means that almost half of the American population is suffering from obesity.
“Our hope is that Americans will see this ‘Hour of Play’ as a wakeup call in their lives. So many people are obese and don’t even realize it. Some people just need that extra push so that they see that there is a problem that needs to be fixed,” said Hastings.
The “Hour of Play” is dedicated to a good cause, but some people are not happy about.
“I am on a time schedule with my binge-watching, and I want to get done by a certain date. This ‘Hour of Play’ will screw up my schedule!” said senior Maggie Bowlby.
However, other people think that the “Hour of Play” is a good idea.
Teacher Cassandra Griffith said, “Not enough people are getting the amount of exercise they need to live healthy lifestyles. This ‘Hour of Play’ will really give them an opportunity to exercise. I hope they take advantage of it.”
Regardless of how you feel about the “Hour of Play,” it is a good opportunity to ask yourself if you need it, and to use it if you do.
